In Eurosport's broadcast, a pleased Gauff says:

This means a lot. I knew it would be a tough match today. Elina is a real fighter and I had to play my best tennis.

Last year, it was Gauff who was the big sensation in the US Open. At 19 years old, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka and won her first Grand Slam title in her career.

In this year's US Open, the world's third-ranked player has started with two straight wins – without losing a single set. However, there have been some question marks surrounding her serves.

In the third round, she faced Elina Svitolina, who is ranked 28th in the world. Then, it was the Ukrainian who started clearly the best and won the first set 6–3. Gauff then bounced back and won the second set with the same score.

In the third set, it was again Gauff who was the strongest. Svitolina did save three match points, but in the end, it was Gauff who emerged victorious from the match.

6–3 in the third set and Gauff advances to the fourth round.

I'm proud of what I managed to do, says Gauff.
