Tuesday's loss was the Jönköping club's fifth in six games.
Färjestad started the match at a furious pace and took an early 2–0 lead, which HV71 never recovered from.
HV71 now faces a best-of-seven series to stay in the SHL. This is the third season in a row that HV71 has had to qualify to stay in the SHL.
Two years ago they beat Oskarshamn and stayed in. Last season they defeated Modo in the agonising relegation play-off.
Which team awaits HV71 this time remains to be seen. Leksand is currently also in a negative qualifying position but has a chance to climb. Two rounds remain.
