The Netherlands fielded a strong eleven. Captain Virgil van Dijk, midfielder Frenkie de Jong and attacking stars Donyell Malen and Cody Gakpo were all selected by national coach Ronald Koeman in the starting XI at home against Algeria.
But no one could break the deadlock. Malen came closest, but the shot went wide of the post.
Instead, Algeria took the lead in the 87th minute when Anis Hadj Moussa neatly slotted the ball in, a goal that turned out to be the only one of the match.
The Netherlands face Uzbekistan in the World Cup qualifiers next week. The national side plays in the same group as Sweden, Tunisia and Japan. In the opening match, they face Japan before taking on Sweden on June 20.
