The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against non-essential travel to Tanzania due to the security situation in the country. Travel companies are now canceling trips to Zanzibar.

The decision to advise against it, which is valid until further notice, was made on Friday.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M), tells Sveriges Radio's Ekot that an estimated one thousand Swedes are in Tanzania. Swedes are urged to contact the embassy and sign up for the so-called Swedish list.

In connection with the elections in Tanzania earlier this week, unrest broke out in the country. Around 700 people have been killed.

Several travel companies are now canceling trips to the island of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania. Ving currently has eight travelers on the island.

They will travel home on their regular departure day, which is within the next few days, says Charlotte Hallencreutz, information officer at Ving.

The company is canceling upcoming trips to Zanzibar in the near future and is contacting current travelers so that they can cancel or rebook a trip.

As long as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' advice remains, we will continue to cancel travelers, says Charlotte Hallencreutz.

Apollo and Tui are also canceling trips to Zanzibar. Apollo has no travelers on site. Tui, on the other hand, has around a hundred Swedish travelers on the island.

We are planning so that they can fly home as planned, says Dian Martinez Valencia, communications manager at Tui, to Aftonbladet .
