Raul Malo, frontman of The Mavericks, has died at the age of 60.

"He was called to do another gig – this time in heaven – and he is flying high like an eagle," his wife Betty Malo wrote on Facebook.

Raul Mano, who was born in Miami, USA, to Cuban parents, co-founded The Mavericks in 1989. The band has won a Grammy and been nominated several times. The band has worked in several genres such as alternative country, Americana, roots and swing.

Malo suffered from cancer that had spread to several parts of his body.
