The announcement comes after the mass shooting in Örebro earlier in February.
"We need to ensure that individuals who are medically unfit to hold firearms do not have permits for them. For the Police Authority to make a correct assessment of a person's suitability to hold weapons, the authority must have access to the information that is relevant to the issue," says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) according to a press release.
Minister of Health and Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD) says that doctors have a difficult but crucial task to inform the police if someone should not have a permit to hold weapons.
"We want to give doctors the best possible conditions to perform this socially important task and therefore, we are now assigning the National Board of Health and Welfare to work together with the Police Authority to strengthen and develop this work," he says.
The authorities will jointly submit an interim report on the assignment no later than September 30, 2025, and submit separate final reports no later than November 30, 2026.
