"My phone call today with Russia's President Putin was very good and productive", writes Trump on Truth Social.
"We agreed on an immediate ceasefire regarding all energy and infrastructure, with an understanding that we will work quickly to achieve a full ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very terrible war", he continues.
"The process is now in full swing and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of humanity, get the job done!"
Talks in the Middle East
Trump and Putin agreed that the path to peace begins with a ceasefire against energy infrastructure and negotiations to implement a "ceasefire at sea in the Black Sea, a full ceasefire and permanent peace", writes the White House in a summary of the call.
"Those negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East."
In a statement from the Kremlin, it is stated that Putin has agreed to and given orders for a 30-day pause in attacks on energy infrastructure, writes AFP.
Putin is also said to have told Trump that the US and its allies must stop all military support and intelligence support to Ukraine for a ceasefire to be possible, writes AFP.
This is described by the Kremlin as a "key condition" for the Russian war of aggression to be resolved with "political and diplomatic means".
According to the White House, the leaders also emphasized "the need for improved bilateral relations between the US and Russia" and that an improvement there has an "enormous upside". This includes "enormous deals and geopolitical stability when peace is achieved".
Prisoner Exchange
According to the Kremlin, Russia and Ukraine will exchange 175 prisoners of war each on Wednesday.
What Trump and Putin have agreed on must ultimately also be approved by Ukraine in order to be implemented.
A ceasefire regarding attacks on energy infrastructure and at sea is something that Ukraine has previously proposed.
The phone call between Trump and Putin lasted for at least an hour and a half, reports American media. The call began at 3 pm, Swedish time, according to the White House.
