The rug is called "Vita spetsporten" and is made of half-pile rya wool from Swedish sheep. The pattern was composed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström in 1934.

"The carpet will be placed in the Riksdalen, which from 1755 to 1974 was the site of the ceremonial opening of the Riksdag. The hall therefore has a strong historical and symbolic connection to the Riksdag," said Speaker Andreas Norlén at the handover, according to a press release.

"The choice of gift also demonstrates our desire to highlight and support Swedish art and Swedish crafts, an important part of our country's cultural heritage and cultural life," Norlén continued.

Carl XVI Gustaf turns 80 on April 30.
