Vladyslav Heraskevych came to the Olympics wearing a specially designed helmet with the faces of more than 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed in the war with Russia.
Despite the IOC banning Heraskevych from using the helmet, he said he would wear it during Thursday's competition.
When asked if Heraskevych could be disqualified, IOC spokesman Mark Adams replied that the Ukrainian would be disqualified if he chose to compete wearing the helmet.
"We will contact him today and reiterate the many opportunities he has had to express his grief," Adams told AFP.
