At the Pituffik base, previously known as Thule base, Greenlanders, Danes, Americans, and Canadians work side by side.
In an email to all employees three days after the visit, the base commander, Colonel Susannah Meyers, writes that she promises her colleagues that "all our flags will wave proudly" on the premises as long as she is in charge there.
JD Vance expressed himself very sharply against Denmark during his visit:
Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job in keeping Greenland safe.
He also said that the base and its surroundings are less secure now than 30-40 years ago.
In the email to the employees, Susannah Meyers emphasized that the concerns expressed by the vice president during his visit do not reflect the conditions on the base.
On Thursday, Space Operations Command announced that Meyers had been relieved of her duties due to lack of confidence in her leadership abilities.
"Commanders are expected to follow the highest standards of conduct, particularly when it comes to remaining politically neutral in the performance of their duties", writes Space Operations Command.
