The Legislative Council consists largely of judges and former judges from the Supreme Court and is tasked with reviewing legislative proposals.
Now the government wants the body to be expanded. From the current maximum of five departments, the government wants the number of departments to be increased to six. Each department consists, as a general rule, of three members.
"The government has a high rate of reform, and will decide on a large number of legislative council referrals in the spring of 2026. The legislative council's review is an important part of the legislative work to ensure that laws are clear, legally secure and function as intended," writes Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a comment.
Therefore, a bill on this will be tabled in the Riksdag. No additional contributions are planned.
The measure is proposed to be temporary and apply from 20 January until 30 June 2026.
