For several months, Liverpool has been rolling over everyone. But since 2024 became 2025, the team has not quite continued on the same track.
Before Saturday's meeting with Brentford, the team had only won one match in all competitions since the turn of the year – against fourth-division team Accrington Stanley.
And for a long time, Mohamed Salah & Co looked like they would remain winless once again. But then Darwin Núñez stepped forward.
The Uruguayan, who has been criticized and benched for large parts of the season, scored the lead goal in stoppage time, when he was correctly positioned and could angle in Trent Alexander-Arnold's pass.
The finish was Liverpool's 34th in the match.
However, the goal was not his only one. Just a minute later, Núñez extended the lead and established the final score with his 2–0 goal.
Arsenal lost a 2–0 lead at home against Aston Villa.
Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz seemed to secure three points for the London team, but two goals within eight minutes by Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins meant 2–2 and a shared pot.
Liverpool is thus six points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the table.
