The average variable interest rate on mortgages fell marginally in December, a review shows. Fixed interest rates, however, continue to rise.

The so-called average interest rate on variable mortgages - what customers actually pay in mortgage interest - was 2.63 percent in December. In November it was 2.64 percent, according to a compilation of 13 banks by comparison site Zmarta.

The average interest rate is usually significantly lower than the banks' advertised list rates.

Skandiabanken had the lowest average interest rate at 2.51 percent, while Ikano Bank had the highest at 2.78 percent.

Fixed interest rates continue to move in the other direction. The average interest rate on a three-year fixed loan rose to 3.02 percent in December, compared to 2.97 percent the previous month.
