An Italian broke the 10,000 meter record in early 2025. Now a Frenchman has sprinted faster than Nils Svensson, formerly van der Poel, and beaten the Swede's world record time in 5,000 meters.

Svensson's 6:01.86 from four years ago has thus been erased from the history books for Timothy Loubineaud's 6:00.23.

However, the Swede was quick to congratulate.

"He was the first to send me a message, and in French, of course," Loubineaud told French L'Equipe after the World Cup in Salt Lake City, USA.

Nils Svensson won double Olympic gold in Beijing 2022, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Shortly after his success, he chose to quit skating.
