The plan was presented to the press at a secret location.
Now it's a reality... F16 is in Ukraine. We did it, said Zelensky, but added that more planes and more pilots who can fly them are needed, writes AFP.
Denmark and the Netherlands are behind the delivery of the US-made fighter jets, reports Ritzau. Norway is also on its way with a delivery.
Promised 100 fighter jets
Ukraine has wanted to increase its air combat power and has been waiting for a long time for fighter jets from the West. Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway have together promised around 100 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
It is unclear how many planes Ukraine has received so far. Russia has threatened to shoot them down and has targeted attacks on bases where the fighter jets may be based.
Earlier, Bulgaria, Poland, and Slovakia have donated Soviet-built, older fighter jets of the type Mig-29 and Su-25.
Evacuations in Donetsk
Russia continues to put areas in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine under a bombing campaign. Ukraine is therefore ordering the evacuation of children and their caregivers from areas where Russia claims military successes.
The enemy is bombing cities and villages in these areas daily, so it has been decided to evacuate children with their parents or other caregivers, says the governor of Donetsk according to AFP.
Russia claims to have captured another village, Novoselivka Persha, in eastern Ukraine. The village is located about three miles northwest of Donetsk.
At the same time, reports are emerging of Russian attacks on infrastructure facilities and residential buildings in, among other regions, the Cherson region. At least 15 people, including a child, have been injured in the past 24 hours, writes Governor Oleksandr Prokudin on the messaging service Telegram.
Russia is also reported to have attacked a railway facility in Poltava, writes the newspaper The Kyiv Independent.
