The SAG Awards have been around for over 30 years and have become one of the most important in Hollywood. The awards are presented by the actors' union SAG-Aftra and are often seen as a gauge of value before the Oscars. The awards ceremony is also now broadcast worldwide on Netflix.
But now the gala is changing its name. At the next gala on March 1, the awards will be presented at The Actor Awards.
"Since its inception, our statuette has been called The Actor and we are an award exclusively for actors, so the new name fits perfectly into the evolution of the gala," says gala producer Jon Brockett to Variety.
A name change has been discussed internally, but the news still came as a surprise to many in Hollywood.
"We realize that many will call the award and the gala the SAG Awards and that's okay. We realize that the change will take time," SAG-Aftra wrote in a statement.
