Kaja Kallas is on site in Washington for various meetings – but the planned meeting with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was cancelled. In an interview with the news agency AFP, Kallas says that Europe will not be able to help in a potential settlement regarding Ukraine unless they are included in the talks by Donald Trump – who, on his part, has tried to negotiate directly with the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kaja Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia, notes that no NATO country has attacked Russia.
Why are we in NATO? Because we are afraid of Russia. And the only thing that really helps – the only security guarantee that works – is NATO's umbrella, she says.
Donald Trump said last week that Ukraine "can forget" about joining NATO. He also repeated the Russian stance that the NATO issue "is probably the reason it all started".
The accusations are completely and utterly false, says Kallas and continues:
It's a Russian narrative that we shouldn't fall for.
The large-scale war in Ukraine began when Russia attacked its neighboring country in February 2022.
