The Dane advances after a thriller

It required five sets. But in the end, Holger Rune made it to the second round of the Australian Open. The Dane got 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 against the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen.

Rune, ranked as number 13 in the world, initially had to struggle uphill. He lost the first set after being broken already in the third game.

The following two sets he took home, only to lose the fourth. In the fifth and decisive set, he managed to break the 49th-ranked Chinese player at 5–4 and thus won the match.

Next, the 21-year-old from Gentofte will face Matteo Berrettini from Italy.

Holger Rune, who has been ranked fourth in the world at best, has repeatedly been pointed out as one of tennis's big future names. Lately, however, his form has wavered and no title has been won since he won the ATP tournament in Munich in April 2023.

Also, fourth-seeded American Taylor Fritz advanced in the Grand Slam tournament after defeating compatriot Jenson Brooksby. On the women's side, sixth-seeded Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan reached the second round via 6–1, 6–1 against 16-year-old Emerson Jones from Australia.
