The Crash Led to a Rush Among Small Investors

The record crash made Nvidia, a semiconductor giant, one of the most bought stocks among Swedish small investors.

Time will tell if it was smart or not, says Frida Bratt, savings economist at Nordnet.

Nvidia went from being the world's highest-valued listed company to falling historically much within the span of just over a week. During three days at the beginning of the week, the stock had lost over 13 percent – and SEK 5,750 billion had gone up in smoke.

And this led small investors to rush into the stock, according to statistics from Nordnet.

It was very popular in June. And it was the second most net-bought stock during those downturn days, says Bratt.

So we saw no concern among investors – on the contrary.

Risks exist

At Nordnet, a total of 52,000 customers own the stock. And just in June, the number of owners increased by as much as 46 percent.

According to Frida Bratt, it is very unusual for an American stock to make it onto the list of most bought stocks in a single month.

There is a Nvidia fever right now. It's being talked about extremely much.

Normally, we Swedes are a bit home-biased. We like the Swedish stock exchange and stocks.

But Frida Bratt adds that there are also risks associated with the semiconductor giant. Primarily due to competitors.

Right now, they are ahead of their competitors when it comes to manufacturing these chips. But competitors are hot on Nvidia's heels.

They may not catch up with Nvidia this year, but maybe they will sometime.

Meme stock increased

Another stock that was popular in June was the so-called meme stock Gamestop – a video game retailer chain. The number of owners of the stock via Nordnet's platform increased by 16 percent in June.

Meme stocks are characterized by rising very much and can fall very much the next day. So it's very difficult to hit the mark there, says Frida Bratt.

The climate control company Munters was the most sold stock in June. And many who had stocks in Rusta also sold them. Which is due to the fact that the stock has done well, believes Frida Bratt.

Then you choose to take home some profit.
