Thousands of houses around the country are deserted and abandoned. Now they are being mapped so that they can hopefully be put to use again.

Starting next year, researcher and cultural geographer Andreas Back at Umeå University will investigate where the abandoned houses are located, why they were abandoned and how they can be put back into use.

Many municipalities feel that they lack support in dealing with the issue. They feel that there is no thought or policy from the national side on how they should deal with abandoned houses, says Andreas Back to SVT Nyheter Västerbotten .

There is even a lack of knowledge about how many abandoned houses there are in the country – so far only a few local surveys have been carried out. By the end of 2029, there will be a comprehensive picture.

The project "Zombies in the rural housing market" is being carried out in collaboration with Linköping University, municipalities and local associations.
