Vaccinations against the mpox virus have begun in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The country is the center of the ongoing outbreak with around 30,000 suspected cases of illness and over 850 deaths. At the beginning of September, the first doses of vaccine arrived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and on Saturday, the vaccinations began.

Hospital staff are the first to receive the vaccine. On Monday, vaccinations of the general public will begin in the eastern parts of the country.

The neighboring country Rwanda began vaccinations against mpox in mid-September.
