The condition of the seriously ill Pope Francis is described on Saturday as stable. After yesterday's acute respiratory problems, it is now announced that the Pope has spent long periods of the day without respiratory assistance.

He is also said to have no fever and there are no signs of new infections. According to the Vatican, the Pope has eaten on his own and continued his "respiratory physiotherapy".

The 88-year-old Pope is suffering from double-sided pneumonia and has been hospitalized since February 14.

On Friday, he was put on a ventilator and the Vatican then called the situation "critical". The Pope was affected by an isolated incident that led to vomiting and acute deteriorated breathing, according to the Vatican.
