The textile industry will have to bear the costs of textile waste itself. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has been tasked with proposing how producer responsibility for textiles should be designed, announced Minister of Climate and Environment Romina Pourmokhtari (L) at a press conference.

Pourmokhtari says that it can be compared to the packaging industry, where producers already have producer responsibility and pay for waste management.

This is what should now be emulated for textiles. We notice that we have more and more textile waste and a lot of wear and tear in the Swedish economy and among Swedish consumers. We want to counteract this through this producer responsibility.

For consumers, it will not make any difference other than that waste management will not be paid for with tax money, she says.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency will report on the assignment in the autumn of 2026.
