The Climate Minister is Reported to the Constitutional Committee: "Downplaying Emissions"

Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) is reported to the Riksdag's Constitutional Committee by the opposition parties S, V, and MP. They are obscuring how emissions can develop going forward, says Elin Söderberg, climate policy spokesperson for the Green Party.

A parliamentary inquiry has been made due to Pourmokhtari's statements about the reduction obligation and different scenarios for emission reductions in the coming years.

The Environmental Protection Agency has presented two scenarios with calculations, one where Sweden, with the new increased reduction obligation, barely meets the EU's climate goals by 2030, and one where it is far from meeting the target.

The uncertainty lies, among other things, in the electrification and sale of fossil fuels in the future.

"Has not chosen the best"

The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that they assess both scenarios as equally likely. The government, on the other hand, from both Romina Pourmokhtari and Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M), has said that there is a "main scenario" where Sweden meets the climate targets.

I have not sat with two scenarios and chosen the best. Our authorities have presented scenarios to the Government Offices, then the Government Offices have made their calculations, and then we get the calculations, Pourmokhtari said to SVT.

When the government presented the climate report for the budget proposal in September, she then mentioned two scenarios – a "decision scenario" and a "sensitivity scenario".

The same thing was also mentioned at a meeting of the Environment and Agriculture Committee in October, according to the opposition.

"Misleading the Swedish people"

"This action raises a lot of questions about the government's handling and whether it is possible that the ministers were not aware that there were different scenarios that showed vastly different outcomes", it says in the parliamentary inquiry.

It is actually astonishing that the Minister of Climate and Environment chooses to mislead the Swedish people. She presents a scenario that suits the minister's purpose. It is a happy calculation to show that the government will reach a climate target, says Anna-Caren Sätherberg, climate policy spokesperson for the Social Democrats.

Vänsterpartiet's Kajsa Fredholm asks whether the Minister of Climate and Environment has received the correct information within the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise.

I think it's very strange. Is it Ebba Busch who controls even Romina Pourmokhtari's area?
