With the purchase of 50,000 tons per year for 15 years, Stockholms Stadshus AB, according to its own statement, becomes the fifth-largest buyer of permanent negative emissions.
The vendor, Stockholm Exergi, is building a facility to capture 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year from the combined heat and power plant in Hjorthagen. Since the carbon dioxide is produced when biomass from the forest is burned, the emissions are considered negative.
The city owns half of the company and has budgeted 120 million SEK.
"We are very excited that this facility will be up and running. It's not just because we are half owners; it will be important for achieving the climate goals," says Finance City Councilor Karin Wanngård (S).
Stockholm Exergi has Microsoft as a customer, among others, and now has certificates for 100,000 tons per year left to sell for 2028–2029.
