The mix-up was discovered a few days ago, when a relative visited the family grave in Arvidsjaur and reacted to someone having dug there. The alarm was raised to the church, which realized that the grave plots had been mixed up – the remains of a recently deceased person were supposed to be in another grave.
The families have now been informed of the mistake.
I've had initial contact with them and it's clear that they are upset and wondering how this could happen, says cemetery manager Johan Norström.
Now the coffin will be dug up and placed in the right grave, which is not a desecration of the grave according to Johan Norström. They will also investigate what led to the mix-up.
The church has been reported to the police, but it is unclear whether the police will investigate the matter.
