The organization has contacted Syria to "emphasize the utmost importance of securing the safety of all material and facilities related to chemical weapons" in the country.
Syria joined the OPCW in 2013 and subsequently destroyed declared weapons. However, there have always been concerns that the declaration was incomplete and that more weapons remained.
"The Syrian declaration of the chemical weapons program can still not be considered correct and complete", states the OPCW.
The organization announces that it is ready to work with authorities in Syria and other international partners to address the issues.
