The goal of introducing a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the EU by 2035 is being scrapped according to a proposal from the European Commission, reports the Financial Times.

A new proposal is about to be presented on Tuesday. The plan is to allow a limited number of fossil-fueled cars.

Carmakers will be allowed to remain at 10 percent of the emissions levels in 2021 as long as they meet certain conditions. One of the conditions is that they use so-called “green steel” in their cars, the newspaper reports, citing two sources.

The exact conditions are still being discussed. Any changes to previous targets must be approved by EU member states and the European Parliament.

The phasing out of fossil-fueled cars in the EU has been a cornerstone of the EU's climate policy, but recently, pressure from Germany and Italy, among others, has led the Commission to agree to relax the regulations.
