Despite the deep-frozen relationship in recent years, Chinese President Xi Jinping is inviting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to China. Both countries are battling high punitive tariffs on exports imposed by US President Donald Trump.

"I welcome the invitation to visit China and further develop the dialogue and I very much look forward to carrying it out (the visit)," Carney said at an ongoing summit within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) in South Korea.

It was there that the two leaders met for the first time since 2017 and that was where the invitation was extended.

China is willing to work with Canada to get Sino-Canadian relations back on track, Xi said.

“In recent years, we have not been as engaged,” Carney admitted when accepting the invitation, adding that “constructive and practical” dialogue is the right method to untie the knots and build a sustainable and inclusive international system.
