Thailand's conservative Bhumjaithai party and Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai party have agreed to form a coalition.

Thaksin Shinawatra's Pheu Thai party, which had been the most successful party of the 2020s, suffered its worst-ever result. The victory was claimed by interim Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's conservative Bhumjaithai party.

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is serving a prison sentence after being convicted of corruption while in office. But analysts predict he will be released early in connection with a political deal, which would pave the way for a formal political comeback.

Bhumjaithai and Pheu Thai have previously been coalition partners until Anutin Charnvirakul withdrew after a scandal over a border dispute with Cambodia.
