Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has called for the parliament to be dissolved, his party announced on Wednesday. This comes after the largest opposition party backed a rival candidate for the prime minister post, former minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Thailand's former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was forced to resign last week after being ruled against by the country's constitutional court.

The Prime Minister was suspended from her duties as early as July 1 and since then, the first Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has replaced her as acting Prime Minister.
