Elon Musk's company sold 52.6 fewer cars in the EU in April this year compared to the same month last year. So far this year, sales for Tesla have fallen by 46.1 percent in the union, according to statistics from the industry organization Acea.

Volvo Cars is also losing sales, minus 18.7 percent so far this year.

But electric cars are increasing overall, from 12 percent during the first four months of last year to 15.3 percent of the total number of cars sold now. Plug-in hybrids are also increasing, although they have a relatively modest 7.9 percent of the market so far this year.

Europeans' first choice is thus currently so-called mild hybrids, i.e. hybrid cars that cannot be charged with a cable. They are increasing strongly to 35.3 percent.

Pure gasoline and diesel cars, on the other hand, are plummeting in sales, although gasoline with 28.6 percent is still the second most popular category. Diesel has to settle for 9.6 percent.
