With President Donald Trump in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos, there are once again hopes for a step toward peace in Ukraine. In addition to peace, AI and energy are among the themes as world leaders meet at the World Economic Forum this week. U.S. tariffs are also likely to be a focus.

The meeting in Davos, which is held annually in the second half of January, is this year a destination for more heads of state and government than usual. At least 64, according to the organizers.

But of course, much will be about the U.S. president, not least after this weekend's tariff threats against countries that have sent military personnel to Greenland - including Sweden.

Between seminars on innovation, energy, AI and the struggle for power and resources in the world, Trump will give a 45-minute speech on Wednesday. He will do so under one of the five thematic headings for this year's meeting - on how cooperation can take place in an uncertain and turbulent situation in the world. This comes after repeated American attempts to take control of Greenland and Venezuela.

Meeting with Zelensky?

Intensive preparations are underway for a side meeting in Davos between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on conditions for peace in Ukraine, including security guarantees.

The leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the President of the European Commission are also expected to attend that meeting.

The record-breaking US delegation reportedly includes Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trump's "peace envoys", Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

Busch on nuclear power

Kushner and Witkoff, also involved in discussions about the future of Gaza, may meet Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Minister of Energy and Enterprise Ebba Busch (KD), also Deputy Prime Minister, will participate in a panel on nuclear power, just like last year. Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rosencrantz (M) will participate in a panel on the tech industry.

Busch will also talk about the Swedish mining industry and Sweden as a European alternative, primarily to China, for the extraction of rare earth metals.

The meeting is held January 19–23 in Davos, Switzerland, with around 3,000 participants - politicians, monarchs, financial and business elites, journalists, researchers and opinion leaders.

Over 60 heads of state and government are attending.

Participants include the presidents of the United States and Ukraine, the leaders of Syria, the president of Egypt, the leaders of the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy and Canada, the vice premier of China, and the presidents of Argentina and Colombia.

Also the head of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, chip giant Nvidia's boss Jensen Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Swedish participants: Minister of Energy and Enterprise Ebba Busch (KD), Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rosencrantz (M), EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, climate scientist Johan Rockström, Vattenfall CEO Anna Borg.

The meeting's thematic headings are about global cooperation in a time when previous truths, norms and rules of conduct are being questioned and broken, about growth opportunities, about investments in new technology and people.
