Discontent was directed at Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, with protesters chanting that he should keep his fingers off the country’s media.
Babiš’s government is proposing that funding for the country’s public service media be included in the state budget, raising concerns that they could become dependent on political decision-makers.
A strike has been called at Czech Television (ČT). Members of the governing coalition continued to work on the proposal at a special session on Sunday night.
“Only the mafia and the Soviet Politburo make decisions at 4:36 in the morning,” protest leader Mikuláš Minář said in Prague on Sunday, according to Czech media.
The prime minister is defending the proposal but says he is open to some discussion. He has condemned the protest movement as seditious.
