Tennis star Coco Gauff would have made her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2021, but missed the games in Japan after testing positive for covid-19.
The debut comes instead in Paris and now the 20-year-old has been selected to be a flag bearer during Friday's Olympic opening ceremony together with basketball star LeBron James.
"I'm incredibly proud to lead my teammates together with LeBron", says Coco Gauff in a statement.
It is the other athletes in the USA's Olympic team who have voted for Gauff and James as flag bearers.
Gauff is ranked as number two in the world and took her first – and so far only – Grand Slam title in singles when she won the US Open last year. Earlier this year, the 20-year-old won the doubles in the Grand Slam tournament French Championships with Czech Katerina Siniakova.
The Olympic opening ceremony will be held on the Seine River in the French capital.
