“Deep in pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to understand that this is real,” the Spanish club wrote, announcing that Jesús de Miguel had died at 8 a.m.
In added time in Monday night’s match, de Miguel was chasing a ball when the Andorran goalkeeper came out at high speed and collided with the Tenerife player.
De Miguel was left lying on the ground and received medical treatment on the pitch after other players quickly called for help.
Owono was shown a red card, but the match continued.
Later that evening, Tenerife announced that de Miguel had suffered a cardiac arrest and that his condition was “stable but serious.” Overnight, the club issued a new update, saying that de Miguel’s neurological condition had deteriorated.
Tenerife is now mourning the death of Jesús de Miguel.
“There are no comforting words. There is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of sadness,” the club wrote.
