Ten men in Lille, northern France, have been charged over the alleged rape of a five-year-old boy.

The ten are aged between 29 and 50 and are under investigation after an incident in February last year in which a man allegedly subjected his five-year-old son to "sexual violence aggravated by the use of chemical substances," the AFP news agency reports.

One of the main suspects committed suicide in custody last year, the prosecutor's office said. For at least one of the defendants, the charges do not concern participation but only that he was sent a film of the incident and did not subsequently report it to the police.

According to the newspaper DNA, the five-year-old's father is also accused, among other things, of complicity in rape, while he is also said to have been victimized.
