The police initially stated that ten people had been killed, but later changed the information. The perpetrators were armed with pistols and automatic weapons.
They entered the pub and shot at random at the guests, unprovoked, said Deputy Police Chief Fred Kekana.
Three people were killed inside the bar and six more were killed as they fled the scene. The perpetrators also allegedly robbed their victims and took valuables, including cellphones, according to police.
The motive and who was behind the shooting are unclear. Police are searching for the perpetrators.
The shooting is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have shocked crime-ridden South Africa, with police saying around 63 people were killed every day between April and September.
