An 18-year-old man is suspected of planning a terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State in central Stockholm, the Swedish Prosecution Authority writes in a press release.

Charges against the man for preparation for a terrorist offense will be brought on Thursday.

"We believe that the purpose of the preparations was to instill serious fear in the population in the name of the Islamic State. The criminal act could have seriously harmed Sweden," says Deputy Chief Prosecutor Henrik Olin in a press release.

According to prosecutors, the preparatory crime took place between August 2024 and February 2025.

The man is also suspected of preparing to violate the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods, a felony, and training for terrorism, a felony.

Together with a 17-year-old, he is also suspected of an attempted murder in Eppstein, Germany, in August 2024.

The 18-year-old was arrested in February and has been in custody since then. A minor mental health assessment has shown that the man may suffer from a serious mental disorder.

The man, who is a Swedish and Syrian citizen, was arrested in the Stockholm area on February 11. He has previously been convicted of, among other things, aggravated sabotage for blue light activities for involvement in the Easter coup in the Linköping district of Skäggetorp in April 2022.
