The man, who is in his 40s, is suspected of gross negligence causing death and of gross negligence in traffic.
The man has confessed, Sydsvenskan reports.
"He is devastated by what happened," defense attorney Sanna Herlin tells the newspaper.
Prosecutor Agneta Roos states in a press release that the man and witnesses have been questioned.
"The police are also checking camera surveillance in the area. We will conduct some technical investigation and await the results of sampling," she says, according to the press release.
It was at 3:30 p.m. on Friday that the police were called to the Södervärn district of Malmö. According to information provided to Sydsvenskan, the girl was hit while using a pedestrian crossing.
