Several girls in their 15th year were taken to hospital on Friday after drinking alcohol that may have contained the toxic substance isopropanol. The incident is said to have occurred in connection with a party in Vallentuna outside Stockholm. The incident is deeply disturbing, says municipal councillor Johan Skog (The Moderate Party).

”The liquor had been purchased from a so-called vodka car that they had made contact with via Snapchat”, the police state on their website.

Two of the girls were unconscious when they were taken to the hospital. During the night, the police received more reports where ”very young people” had to be taken to the hospital after drinking liquor they had bought from a vodka car. According to SVT News it involves six young people.

In connection with the sampling, they have in several cases received indications that the liquor contained isopropanol, according to the police. According to the Poison Information Center, it can be dangerous to ingest, especially for children. The substance is used, among other things, to clean electronics. Symptoms that can occur if you ingest it include intoxication, low blood pressure, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

”Larger problem”

Johan Skog, chairman of the municipal council in Vallentuna, says that his thoughts go to the affected young people and their families.

The most important thing is that it goes well for these young people, he says.

The municipality takes the situation ”very seriously”.

And it seems to be a sign of a larger problem with alcohol and social media among young people.

Contact with the schools

He is not aware of any previous, similar serious incident in the municipality. They have now made contact with the schools in Vallentuna and social services are involved, according to Johan Skog.

And we have a collaboration within the framework of ”Safest Vallentuna” where we work with the police and rescue services.

There is also an ongoing dialogue about this type of issue through the municipality's field activities, he says.

But at this stage, it is important that the police get to do their job, so we get a better picture of exactly what has happened.
