President Donald Trump's AI plan is to "strengthen the USA's position" in the area. Companies and organizations have been invited to submit their thoughts on the plan. Both Google and Open AI are clear in their responses: Let us train our AI models on copyrighted material, otherwise the USA will lose the AI race against China, reports tech site The Verge.
"There is very little doubt that AI developers in China will have unlimited access to data – including copyrighted material – which will improve their models", writes Open AI. If American companies are not allowed to compete on equal terms, the "AI race is in every way over", the company believes.
Google phrases it similarly and means that "fair use", a concept in American legislation concerning exceptions in copyright law, has been a critical building block in today's AI models.
