Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will leave Congress in January. The announcement comes after the former Trump loyalist harshly criticized the president.

Taylor Greene will leave his seat in the House of Representatives on January 5, US media reports.

She has been loyal to US President Donald Trump, but has been open about her criticism of him in recent weeks. This has included his foreign policy focus, and she has also been clear in her support for the release of all documents from the investigation into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"Supporting American women who were raped at the age of 14, sold and exploited by rich, powerful men should not lead to me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I have fought for," she said in a statement on X in connection with announcing her departure from Congress.

“Too much self-respect”

Trump has recently dismissed Taylor Greene as "weird", "whiny" and a "traitor".

"I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family too much, and don't want to see my fine constituency have to go through a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, just to fight and win my election while the Republicans will likely lose the midterm elections," Taylor Greene said in the statement.

Apologized

Right-wing populist Taylor Greene was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and quickly became known as a controversial member who, among other things, openly supported the conspiracy movement Qanon and spread false accusations of election fraud.

This action led to her being excluded from committee work, among other things. However, in 2021 she apologized after comparing the requirement to wear a face mask to the Holocaust.

Earlier in November, Taylor Greene apologized and promised to stop using “toxic” rhetoric.
