There were just over four minutes left in regulation when John Tavares got the puck in the net and made history. The 35-year-old Canadian can now call himself the 49th player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal milestone.
"To play for two great teams and achieve the success I've had says a lot about my teammates, coaches, the people around me and everyone who's been a part of the journey. I've really enjoyed it and just want to keep going," Tavares said after his historic performance, according to nhl.com .
Although teammate Nicholas Robertson managed to score another goal for Toronto shortly after Tavares, the deficit could not be overcome, and the game ended 6–3 to Columbus.
