Tate McRae is receiving criticism in her home country of Canada for a television commercial in which the pop star praises the U.S. Olympic team.

Relations between Canada and the United States are not at their best. That may be why the criticism on social media against Tate McRae in the winter-sports-mad country is particularly harsh after the star appeared in a television commercial for American television network NBC ahead of the Olympics, writes the New York Times.

Toronto Life magazine even calls her a “traitor.”

"I'm trying to get to Milan for a great opening and to meet Team USA," McRae says in the commercial, where she also pays tribute to downhill skier Lindsey Vonn.

Tate McRae seems to have taken the criticism to heart. After the social media storm, the artist posted a picture on Instagram of herself as a child holding a Canadian flag with the caption: "You know I'm from Canada."
