The British Tate museums are purchasing an embroidered work by the Sami artist Britta Marakatt-Labba, according to Sveriges Radio's Kulturnytt. "Instangslad" from 2024 is about the impact of the mine on the center of Kiruna, which has been relocated precisely because of the mining operation.
Britta Marakatt-Labba has embroidered a picture where Sami women in traditional hats fall into a mine shaft.
The purchase is part of Tate's investment in indigenous art, following the recent purchase of three works by Sami artist Anders Sunna.
"Because you buy this, we are in the collections," Britta Marakatt-Labba tells Kulturnytt.
