The attack took place on Wednesday evening, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the British navy’s maritime traffic watchdog. At the time, the ship was in the central Persian Gulf, between Bahrain and Qatar to the west and Iran to the east.
UKMTO said injuries had been reported, but its brief message did not make clear whether anyone had been killed.
Most attacks on tankers in the Persian Gulf have taken place closer to the Strait of Hormuz. In this case, the attack appears to have occurred about 10 nautical miles from the northern tip of Qatar.
