Representatives of the Taliban government in Afghanistan have met with American envoys at a UN-led meeting on Afghanistan in Qatar.
According to the Taliban's spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, they discussed a possible prisoner exchange with two American citizens who are being detained in Afghanistan and Afghans being held at the notorious American military prison Guantanamo.
We should be able to release our citizens in exchange, since American citizens are important to them (USA) just as Afghans are important to us, said Mujahid to reporters at a press conference in Kabul, after returning from the meeting.
The meeting's focus is to increase engagement for Afghanistan, and it is the third time it has been held. It was the first time that representatives of the Taliban government participated, but the UN is careful to emphasize that their participation does not imply recognition of the Taliban government.
The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021 after US forces left the country.
The USA has not yet commented on a possible prisoner exchange.
