The release follows appeals from the 64-year-old's family and a ruling by the country's highest court that his time in captivity was sufficient, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said.

Dennis Coyle was arrested in his Kabul apartment in January 2025, shortly after the Taliban released another American prisoner. The 64-year-old was accused of violating Afghan law, but authorities have never publicly disclosed which laws were involved.

According to CBS News, Coyle spent nearly two decades in Afghanistan, where he conducted linguistic research. The United Arab Emirates reportedly acted as a mediator to secure his release.
