According to the news site Euractiv, Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot informed the Belgian parliament on Wednesday about the invitations, but without specifying when the meeting will take place.
The European Commission and Sweden are formally behind the invitation, after a large number of EU countries wanted to hold a meeting to discuss how deportations to Afghanistan could be carried out in practical terms. According to Euractiv, all EU countries have been asked to appoint a contact person if they want to participate or receive information about the meeting.
The planned meeting with the Taliban has also received harsh criticism from human rights organizations and the political opposition, among others. The meeting itself is expected to take place in July.
